The Fragile Gift of Life
When the World Goes Quiet
A cough. A fever. What started as a minor inconvenience on a plane ride spiralled into six weeks of bedridden suffering from a serious respiratory infection.
Confined to my room, the days stretched out before me, filled not with activity, but with a harsh realisation of life’s impermanence. The once vibrant world outside reduced to muffled sounds and flickering sunlight on the ceiling.
The Illusion of Invincibility
We often view ourselves as invincible, striding through life without a care in the world. Good health feels like a birthright, an endless source of energy that fuels our ambitions.
We meticulously plan our careers, pursue goals and build dreams, enveloped in a false sense of control. This illness, this virus, a microscopic invader, shattered that illusion. It served as a humbling reminder that even with a healthy lifestyle – daily exercise, a quality diet, life-affirming routines and an abundance of loving relationships – it only takes one moment, one event, to change everything.

What Truly Holds Value
I realised that time and health are the true currencies of value. We often spend them freely, on autopilot, overlooking their finite nature. We rush through our days, preoccupied with all our little projects and worries, ignoring that even the strongest, most successful, most loved, most disciplined and most influential among us are guaranteed to run out of these precious resources one day.
A Reminder to Treasure Life
Despite the hardship, I find myself strangely grateful. Life’s lessons come in different packages, some wrapped in joy, others in suffering. Sometimes a brush with illness is the catalyst we need to truly appreciate the blessings we already possess – be it the simple joy of witnessing a sunrise, the ability to take a deep breath, being able to taste the food we eat, or to spend quality time with our loved ones.
This episode served as a poignant reminder to cherish every moment, appreciate the little things and never take anything for granted.
